Busy with this

Been a long time since I last blogged for a few reasons... the main of which being my new job.
After finishing at Pct I went on to do a trial for EURO RSCG 4D (part of EHS Brann) which (joyfully) turned into a job after a month or so. This, coupled with the amount of freelance work I lined up to try and keep an income when I thought I'd be unemployed, has left me working all the hours of the day on shit loads of cool things.

Above are a selection of logos and type bits I have done, some as part of a bigger contract (NXG Magazine) and some just cool bits of branding (COOKS DJ's logo and ident). I'll throw up more about these at a later stage, but this was mainly to let you know I hadn't been killed by the recession and am still alive.

2009 up until today

AlistairGuy.com

Funny start to the year really... Picture, the agency I worked for, went bust and left me redundant as of the 16th Jan. So this year is all about starting again and being very productive with all of my time to make sure I'm not recessioned into oblivion! Which leads me onto some of the I've been doing...

January saw the launch of my relationship with fashion photographer Alistair Guy. We launched his site earlier in the month alongside his new branding and an ad in Le Book (above). The site was released with a CMS being handed over to Alistair, so visit back now and again to see more beautiful shots uploaded as they're made! He is also running a show at The Tapestry gallery in April which shall see some of his work coupled with some delightful typography beneath them.

Also been able to spend some time (I have some to spare now) drawing letters again - this is a typeface I'm pushing through at the moment named after the circumstances under which it was created. Wide, confident letters with proportions similar to Eagle (little joke in the relationship between the two if your font nerd). I expect to get this ready over the next month hopefully.

I have also updated my online portfolio with some work I had previously neglected, so check it out if you haven't recently.

I will probably be blogging more as a result of my employment status - so subscribe to the blog for lots of new (and some old) work being published until I land somewhere new!

Turkey Twizzler Mixtape

I recently made this for good buddy of mine, DJ DRAMA (myspace him). The mix CD, entitled Turkey Twizzler, is a mix of some lovely Dubstep and is available for free download from:

Skint Club

Not sure exactly what the Skint Club is yet, but I was asked to give a logo some thought today in the studio. Thought I'd share what I drew.

Heavy Type

Is anyone in/does anyone know a metal band that needs a logo? I would really like to draw one for them after this doodle session at work.

I love how illegible they often are and how distorted you can make the letter forms whilst still being hugely popular amongst their audiences. Takes me back to when I used to love drawing wildstlye graffiti pieces in my school books - having to consider the overall composition of the piece whilst maintaining the most basic set of rules of making letters.

So, if you are in a metal band, please let me.

(Also found this thread on Typophile on the topic which makes a nice read.)

New Portfolio

Since starting work, I didn't need my website to do the same things it was doing when I was trying to find placements. So I felt it appropriate to give it a remix and put up work that I enjoy more rather than things that might impress employers.

Plus I needed to convince potential clients of my capabilities in effective design on the web, and felt that using indexhibit maybe wasn't the best way of me doing so.

Still want to do some tweaking to speed up the loads and get the scripts kicking in earlier - but am pretty happy with its navigation now and think its an effective way of showing my work.

Ch-Ch-Check it out

Pirate Helvetica DVD

A copy of Helvetica set in a copy of Helvetica.

Death

Now living in Forest Gate, I am close to a huge old graveyard which is full of cool type and old stones (and dead people).

Here are two of my favourites, the first for being such a disgusting mess and lack of respect for the dead and central alignment. How can Lillian sleep at night?

The second is probably the best thing that could have happened when you decided to set the type in italic. That in 105 years your grave would capsize but your type would remain upright.

Nice Up

Last friday saw Goldsmiths Uni entertain a host of Grime kids under the banner of 'Nice Up The Dance' - I made it look pretty for them across posters, flyers and web banners donning this little ensemble of lettering.

I'm Celebrity Stylist Chris Benns and Im here to talk to you about...

...ChrisBenns.com

Just finished the website for stylist Chris Benns.
Got to have fun with some javascripting and made something that I feel is pretty slick and shows off his work pretty nicely in a world full of pretty shitty stylists websites.

Give it a go here.

A good little while...

I'll let my last post serve as an excuse for my lack of posts of late... plus I've only just got internet at my new gaff so heres an overdue little burst of updates.

I posted a while ago about a font Ive been working on and its starting to get fontlabbed now and should be ready reasonably soonish.

Also completed the ID for a rather nice band The Kemistry (despite spelling their name incorrectly on a flyer I made a little while ago, but luckily they didn't hold that against me). Good fun logo with lots of room for play and adaptation in the future and hopefully a chance to get some tees made..?

I also finished a flyer earlier today for a good looking night over at Goldsmith's uni, but I'll upload that at a later stage along with a few other recent pieces as well as some of the lovely stuff I've been doing at Picture.

Full Time Work

As of today I work at Picture.

I interned for these guys a fw months back (see Channel 4's Black Gold website) and am more than a bit happy to be joining them full time.

Whats more, I shall be joined by Ehsan Bhatti (fellow exhibitor at Eleven pt) after putting him in touch with the Film and Moving Image side of the studio! Very disgusting work is sure to emerge.
